Sgt. 1st Class Jeff Hytower, a practical nursing specialist assigned to Madigan Army Medical Center, stopped at the scene of a serious crash on Interstate 5 near DuPont, Washington, on Oct. 5, 2026, according to a report published by Defense News on Oct. 10.
The account says Hytower was commuting to Joint Base Lewis-McChord when he encountered an overturned SUV. He turned around, switched on his hazard lights and stopped in a safe location, the report said.
Hytower told the publication that his response was instinctive and that his training took over. The report states he then saw a woman attacking two children with a knife and moved in to intervene.
The supplied material does not describe what happened after Hytower intervened, identify the people involved, or provide information about injuries or any law-enforcement response.
