Police in Bend, Oregon, said a bystander intervened during Thursday’s shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School and stopped the gunman. A law enforcement source identified the man as Kaylub Giamanco, 36, Fox News Digital reported. The attack killed three children and a teacher.
At a Friday news conference, police identified the teacher killed as Meghan Lambert, 25, and said 5-year-old Rhoam Summer was among the youngest victims. The three students killed were ages 5, 8 and 11, according to the report. The source material does not provide the names of the other two children.
Lambert’s family described her as compassionate and devoted to people who were vulnerable, including those with special needs. In a statement read at the news conference, relatives said she was a loving sister, daughter, niece and granddaughter, and that friendships were important to her.
Earlier Friday, Kenda Freeman said in a statement that her son, Giamanco, intervened and shot the gunman, The Associated Press reported. Giamanco’s brother, identified in the source as Kyle Giamanco, told NBC News that Kaylub is a local carpenter and father whose two daughters attend Silver Rail. His brother said he was shaken by the incident and did not want to speak publicly.
Lambert’s family also addressed the person who intervened, saying they understood he was going through a difficult time and were grateful for his actions. The family said he had put himself at risk to protect others, and expressed sympathy and support for the other victims’ families.
The report identifies the shooting as occurring Thursday and describes police announcements made Friday. It does not provide further details about the gunman, the circumstances leading up to the attack, or the condition of any additional people affected.
