Rong Yuan has made public hidden-camera footage in the case against David Xu, a former coworker at Berkeley Engineering and Research in California. The video appears to show Xu pouring a substance into her water bottle in March 2019, according to the source report.
Prosecutors said Xu poisoned Yuan’s food and water with cadmium between 2017 and 2019. Xu faced charges that included attempted murder and felony poisoning, but pleaded no contest to one poisoning count under a plea agreement, according to the San Francisco Standard as cited in the report. A judge sentenced him to probation in 2024, extending it to two years and describing the agreement as unusually generous.
Xu has completed probation and is asking an Alameda County judge to dismiss the felony conviction. The district attorney’s office opposes the request. The report says California law requires a judge to grant dismissal if the defendant satisfies probation requirements. It also notes that dismissal would not remove the conviction from Xu’s record.
Yuan told the Standard that releasing the footage was a last resort. She said she experienced serious symptoms after beginning work at the company, and that suspicions about her water bottle grew after her mother noticed an unusual taste. Yuan placed a hidden camera at her desk in February 2019 and later provided footage to Berkeley police.
The source does not report the outcome of Xu’s dismissal request. Fox News Digital said it sought comment from Xu’s attorney.
