Kelly Day, 32, was charged with first-degree murder in the Oct. 7 killing of Larry Young, 50, on Chicago’s South Side, Chicago police said in a news release, according to Fox News. Young died from multiple sharp-force injuries, and his death was ruled a homicide by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Prosecutors said at a detention hearing that surveillance footage showed Day stabbing Young 13 times near a gas station. The Chicago Tribune reported that prosecutors described an earlier dispute at a McDonald’s over Day’s use of a women’s restroom, followed later by an argument between Day and Young over comments about Day’s gender. Prosecutors said Young pushed Day before heading toward the gas station, and Day followed.
Day told investigators that Young used a slur, threatened Day and Day’s wife, and made a gesture that suggested he had a gun, according to the Tribune. Day characterized the incident as self-defense. These claims have not been resolved in court.
Prosecutors said Day called 911 after the stabbing, left before officers arrived, and later called again with a different account of an injury. They also said Day discarded the knife, which investigators recovered with part of its blade missing. The Tribune reported that an autopsy found a blade fragment in Young’s skull.
Chicago police and the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Day on the evening of Oct. 7, according to the report. At a Saturday detention hearing, Judge John Hock ordered Day held pending trial, citing the seriousness of the allegations. Day was scheduled to return to court Tuesday.
