Conor Kennedy and Brazilian pop singer Giulia Bourguignon Marinho celebrated their wedding with a series of events in Rio de Janeiro beginning Oct. 8, according to the supplied report. Marinho performs under the name Giulia Be. The celebration unfolded across several parts of the city, from the hills of Alto da Boa Vista to Ipanema Beach and the historic center.
The couple had legally married in a private civil ceremony in Los Angeles in March, Vogue reported. The later Rio gathering was organized as a three-day celebration, with a blessing at the Christ the Redeemer statue, a ceremony at Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga Sé and a reception at Instituto Brando Barbosa, a historic mansion in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood.
Marinho told the outlet the couple wanted the gathering to honor Rio, a city they love, and said being there with family while overlooking the city was especially meaningful. In an earlier interview with Brazilian outlet Globo, she said the event offered an opportunity to bring Kennedy’s family and friends to Brazil and introduce them to the city. The report also recounts her telling Kennedy she did not want to marry in Massachusetts.
The festivities reportedly opened with a welcome party in Alto da Boa Vista. The following day, guests played beach volleyball on Ipanema before joining the couple for the blessing at Christ the Redeemer, which stands atop Corcovado Mountain within Tijuca National Park. The site is known for views across Rio.
The church ceremony was held at Antiga Sé, in the city’s historic center. The church dates to 1808 and served as a royal chapel and cathedral after the Portuguese royal court arrived in Brazil, the report says. The reception venue, Instituto Brando Barbosa, is in Jardim Botânico, an area that also contains Rio’s public botanical garden.
Kennedy is a son of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who serves as secretary of Health and Human Services in the Trump administration, and a grandson of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. Robert F. Kennedy was the brother of President John F. Kennedy.
Vogue noted that Marinho wore a Calvin Klein slip dress for the wedding blessing, describing the look as reminiscent of the understated style associated with Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Conor Kennedy’s late aunt by marriage.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. shared photographs from the events on social media, according to the report. The images included the wedding party beneath Christ the Redeemer, his wife Cheryl Hines with samba dancers, and the newlyweds checking their phones for updates on a Seminoles-Cardinals game. Marinho responded to Kennedy’s Instagram post with an affectionate message and said she was happy to see the family enjoying her hometown.
