Twitch streamer Hasan Piker defended his use of derogatory terms for political opponents during a lengthy interview with NPR host Leila Fadel on Thursday. The discussion addressed criticism of Piker’s rhetoric and whether the backlash against him stemmed from his remarks or his identity.

Piker acknowledged using incendiary language. He argued that similar remarks draw less scrutiny when made by people who are white, Christian and born in the United States, saying his background accounts for much of the criticism he faces.

Fadel challenged Piker on his use of language she described as dehumanizing, including “inbred” for some ultra-Orthodox Jews and “Zionist pig.” She asked how he reconciled that rhetoric with his own experience of feeling dehumanized.

Piker said he seeks to be “ruthless” toward people he sees as bullying others or advancing ideologies that cause harm. He described “inbred” as a pejorative he applies to right-wing, ethno-supremacist and neo-Nazi ideologies, arguing that such ideologies emphasize ethnic or racial purity. He said the term was not meant literally. He also defended using “pig,” saying he applies comparable language to different targets.

Piker said his remarks can come out of anger and frustration, and argued that they are directed at people’s actions or beliefs rather than their backgrounds. He characterized the targets as usually holding what he called reactionary views.

The Israeli-American Council criticized Piker’s comments in a statement to Fox News Digital. The organization said Jewish history showed the consequences of hatred and rhetoric portraying Jews as less than human. It also cited the Hamas attack of Oct. 7, 2023, describing the killings, sexual violence, torture and hostage-taking as the deadliest massacre of Jewish people since the Holocaust. The council said antisemitic hatred was not an abstract issue for Jews.

Fox News Digital reported that it contacted Piker for comment but had not received a response at the time of publication.

The source says Piker was suspended from Twitch for seven days in January after using the phrase “Zionist pig.” It also reports that he has repeatedly criticized Zionism and Israel. Piker has campaigned with Democratic candidates, while some Democrats distanced themselves from him in August after he warned American Jews they could face violence if they continued to support Israel.

The interview and the council’s response present opposing assessments of Piker’s language: Piker says he is condemning ideologies and actions, while the council argues that such rhetoric carries particular risks for Jews given the history of antisemitic dehumanization.
