Hyundai is recalling 94,622 vehicles because a power-seat adjustment problem could cause the seat motor to run continuously and overheat, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall report. The agency said overheating could raise the risk of fire whether a vehicle is being driven or parked.
The recall covers 39,978 model-year 2017 through 2020 Genesis G80 sedans and 54,644 model-year 2015 and 2016 Hyundai Genesis sedans. Hyundai estimates that about 1% of the recalled vehicles have the defect.
NHTSA said the slider and height-adjustment switches for non-memory power seats could be dislodged or damaged by outside force. If a switch remains engaged, the seat adjustment motor may continue operating after the occupant leaves the vehicle. Prolonged operation can cause the motor to overheat, the agency said.
Possible warning signs include a burning smell and seat-control switches that no longer operate. NHTSA recommends that owners of affected vehicles park outside and keep them away from other vehicles and structures until the repair is completed.
Hyundai said it is aware of two fires associated with the defect. The automaker reported no crashes or injuries related to the issue in the United States as of Oct. 1. The source material does not specify the year for that date.
A remedy is still being developed, according to the recall report. Owners will be notified by mail and may take their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer or Genesis retailer for repairs at no cost. The source material says Fox Business contacted Hyundai for comment but does not provide a response.
