Kelly Clarkson criticized Brooklyn store Art of Play after describing an unpleasant visit in a post on X, saying an employee appeared to assume she could not afford the items she wanted to buy.
Clarkson wrote that she had traveled to the shop with several purchases in mind. She said an employee offered to find her something comparable, which she interpreted as dismissive. Clarkson compared the encounter to a scene in the 1990 film “Pretty Woman,” in which a saleswoman turns away Julia Roberts’ character.
The post drew reactions online, according to Fox News. The report said some users criticized the store and that several appeared to post negative reviews on its Google listing. Those online reactions do not independently establish what happened during Clarkson’s visit.
Art of Play had not issued a formal statement addressing Clarkson’s account at the time of the report. Fox News said a store representative did not immediately respond to its request for comment. The report also described an Instagram Story from the shop featuring a customer review praising its staff’s kindness; it was later deleted, according to Us Weekly.
Art of Play describes itself as a Brooklyn shop selling toys, games, books, puzzles and home goods. Its website also lists a theater for close-up magic performances.
