New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, that the city will conduct an internal review of the NYPD’s use-of-force policies, accompanied by what he described as community engagement. The announcement also includes $2.6 million in additional funding for the Office of Inspector General for the NYPD.
The mayor said the review is intended to strengthen accountability. City officials will also notify state authorities when officers facing disciplinary charges retire, giving the state an opportunity to consider decertification, according to the announcement.
The initiative follows the 2024 fatal shooting of 19-year-old Win Rozario. New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office declined to bring criminal charges against the officers in December 2025, saying prosecutors could not disprove beyond a reasonable doubt that the use of deadly force was justified under state law. One of the officers involved retired in May 2026, before a disciplinary trial could take place.
Mamdani’s announced steps do not fulfill several pledges he made during his mayoral campaign. He had promised to disband the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group, end a database of suspected gang members and shift police resources away from certain lower-level offenses. The source report says those measures remain in place. It also reports that public urination summonses rose 18% during his tenure.
Mamdani has retained Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who was appointed by his predecessor, Eric Adams. His office did not immediately respond to the source publication’s request for comment about whether his approach to police reform had changed since the campaign.
