New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Tuesday he has no plans to remove NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, responding to demands from Democratic Socialists of America allies after an ICE-involved shooting in the Bronx.
Mamdani made the remarks before a ceremony honoring fallen police officers. He said he retained Tisch because of her work addressing corruption in the department and cited recent lows in recorded murders and shootings. Those crime figures were presented in the source as Mamdani’s statements.
The New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America had called for Tisch’s removal and urged Mamdani to use his authority against ICE in the city. The shooting involved Oscar Belgal during a federal immigration operation. The Department of Homeland Security said Belgal was shot after allegedly failing to follow officers’ orders during an operation to arrest him. The circumstances of the shooting were under review, according to a City Hall spokesperson.
Mamdani and Tisch attended the police memorial ceremony together. The event honored 42 fallen NYPD members, including officers who died from illnesses related to the Sept. 11 attacks and their aftermath, as well as Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, killed in a 2025 mass shooting in Manhattan.
Earlier in the week, Mamdani directed the NYPD to conduct a comprehensive review of its use-of-force policies and practices and announced reforms concerning accountability in cases of alleged serious misconduct.
