NBC named Michael Jordan a “special contributor” ahead of its 2025-26 NBA coverage, prompting expectations that the six-time champion might make regular studio appearances. Instead, the network aired portions of a single interview with play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico during pregame shows over the season.

Speaking Tuesday at the Front Office Sports Tuned In summit in New York City, Tirico defended the limited format. He said people were still asking about the interview nearly a year later, which he viewed as evidence that the approach had been worthwhile.

The interview addressed broader subjects, including load management and Jordan’s interest in basketball, rather than daily league debates or current players. Tirico said Jordan had been away from television for a long time and appeared more interested in discussing basketball, business and golf than taking on a routine broadcast role. He added that he would welcome another conversation if Jordan wanted to participate.

The source report says Jordan is not expected to return as a contributor for the 2026-27 season. NBC’s NBA rights are part of an 11-year agreement that also includes Disney-owned ESPN and Amazon Prime Video. The league’s 2026-27 season is scheduled to begin Oct. 20.
