Jacob Fleig, a 22-year-old from Berlin, New Jersey, was critically injured in a jump from a coastal road into the sea at Fiordo di Furore on Oct. 5, while vacationing in Italy with his fiancée, according to reports cited by Fox News.

Fleig reportedly jumped from a height of nearly 100 feet at the narrow inlet on the Amalfi Coast. Italian outlet RaiNews reported that he hit the water in a bad position and suffered a cut to his back. Emergency responders brought him to a hospital, and he was later transferred by helicopter to a hospital in Salerno.

His brother, Jimmy Dorner, said in a GoFundMe campaign that Fleig had undergone multiple life-saving procedures and surgeries and was receiving intensive care. Dorner wrote that the family’s immediate aim was to get Fleig medically stable and strong enough to travel back to the United States, where he could continue treatment, including additional surgeries and therapy.

A cousin wrote on Facebook the day after the accident that Fleig was in a medically induced coma at a Salerno hospital. The cousin also said Fleig’s mother and brother were traveling to Italy to be with him. According to the cousin, Fleig had proposed to his girlfriend after they arrived in Italy, and she accepted.

RaiNews reported that doctors assessed the injury as serious but not life-threatening the day after the incident. The supplied reports do not provide a later medical update. A fundraiser organized to help with expenses had collected more than $47,000 toward a $50,000 target as of Saturday afternoon, according to the source material.

Fiordo di Furore is a well-known coastal gorge with a small beach beneath a bridge. Italy’s tourism site says professional divers make jumps from the cliffs during organized events. That does not establish that the location is safe for visitors to jump from outside organized activities.

The source material says government agencies warn that submerged rocks or shallow water can lead to severe injury or death. Their guidance is to avoid diving into unfamiliar water and heed local warnings. It also cites a 2023 report of a woman slipping and falling at the cove, but provides no further details about her condition.

Fleig is studying electrical engineering, according to his LinkedIn profile. Dorner described his brother in the fundraiser as someone who brings light to others, and said Fleig had faced adversity and grown stronger. Fox News said it had contacted the family for comment.
