The New York Army National Guard honored Revolutionary War crewmen killed in a Lake Champlain naval battle during a ceremony Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, according to Defense News.
The Guard’s Honor Guard provided military funeral honors for remains identified as belonging to crewmen of the gunboat Philadelphia. The vessel went down during the Battle of Valcour Island on Oct. 11, 1776, after it was sunk by a British ship.
The Philadelphia was manned by 44 soldiers, most of whom were members of the New Hampshire militia, the report said. The ceremony took place 250 years after the battle.
