The NFL has withdrawn a fine against Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams over an apparent smoking gesture during a celebration, according to the source report published Oct. 13, 2026.
Williams argued on appeal that marijuana is legal. The celebration took place during a game against the Buffalo Bills, where recreational marijuana is legal, as it is in Michigan, the report said.
Appeals officer Derrick Brooks rescinded Williams’ fine and asked him to make future celebrations professional, according to a statement cited by the NFL Network. The report said Lions teammates Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs were also fined for participating in the celebration, but had not yet received decisions on their appeals.
The league stopped suspending players for repeat positive marijuana tests in 2020, the report noted. It also described other recent celebration fines that were rescinded, including one involving San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk.
The NFL’s decision concerns Williams’ fine specifically; the source does not report that the league changed its celebration rules.
