A 36-year-old man has been charged after police say he attacked a female coworker with a knife during a ride home in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Police said they responded Friday to a report of a car that had crashed into Augie’s To-Go, an Italian restaurant. Officers found the driver with a serious neck laceration that investigators believed was not caused by the crash.

The passenger, identified by police as David Cruz Torres, was detained after allegedly trying to leave the area. Detectives said the two worked together and that Cruz Torres had asked the woman for a ride after their shift.

According to police, he cut the woman’s throat while she was driving. Police said she escaped by jumping from the moving vehicle and calling for help. Her injuries were described as life-threatening, and she was airlifted to a hospital.

Cruz Torres was charged with second-degree attempted murder and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The charges are allegations; the source material did not provide information about a court appearance or plea.
