Bryan Stern, chairman and CEO of Grey Bull Rescue and a 9/11 first responder, said the attempted hijacking of FlyDubai flight FZ1073 shows that Western governments may be underestimating the sophistication of terrorist threats. Speaking to Fox News Digital, Stern called for greater attention to how adversaries plan and operate.

United Arab Emirates investigators have characterized the incident as an attempted terror attack. According to the source report, the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain and tried to take control of the aircraft, which had more than 170 passengers and crew aboard, most of them Israelis. Australian authorities are also investigating the co-pilot’s possible links to Australia.

Stern warned that security challenges can extend beyond conventional border screening, arguing that networks could exploit people with legitimate passports. His statements about the scale and nature of the threat were his assessments, not findings attributed in the report to investigators.

The incident prompted security reviews, the report said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed his National Security Council to examine procedures for foreign civil aviation traveling to Israel. Vice President JD Vance said U.S. flight security procedures were also under review.

Stern, whose nonprofit conducts evacuations from conflict zones and hostage situations, argued that military force alone cannot eliminate terrorist movements. He described current adversaries as more capable and resourced than some groups the United States has previously fought.

The report presents Stern’s views alongside limited details about the investigation and does not establish the co-pilot’s motive or the full circumstances of the alleged attack. His broader claims about terrorist capabilities and future risks should be understood as warnings from an outside expert, rather than confirmed conclusions by authorities.
